Postgraduate Studies in Ageing and Health
Did you know that...
- The Australian population has been gradually ageing throughout the last century. By 2050 there will be more old Australians (people aged 60+) than young Australians, with the number of ‘old old’ (those aged 80+) expected to hit the 2.75 million mark.
- Globally, the number of people over the age of 60 will more than triple over the next 50 years, increasing from 606 million today to nearly 2 billion by 2050. The vast majority of these older people will live in the developing world.
- At the same time, the number of children under the age of 15 years in the world’s population will fall dramatically to between 10 to 20% of the population.
What do these trends herald for Australia and for societies across the globe? What are the implications of having so many old and so few young in the population? Will longer life mean worse health? Or will we see substantial improvements in disability-free years and the pushing up of boundaries of active and productive middle age? With increasing pressure on government budgets, how will scarce health resources be best allocated – and who will decide what’s ‘best’? How will families, businesses, and local communities respond to these changes?
These are some of the questions that students will consider in Macquarie University's postgraduate programs in Ageing and Health. There are three programs available:
